I was a little disappointed with this one – it is as if Alt wasn’t too sure where she wanted to take her character, Maggie, especially now that she is with Marcus. Still, the book was worth the read if you’re a fan of the series. After all, Maggie is always finding herself at the wrong place at the wrong time, and it usually has to do with dead bodies.
This novel is no exception. In this seventh installment of the Bewitching Mysteries series, Alt opens the novel with Maggie back at work again, hobbling around with her broken ankle. Does that stop Maggie from trying to help Marcus discover what is truly behind the death of the madelny of an apartment complex? Of course not, this is Maggie I am writing about after all.
Her middle name is can’t stay out of trouble to save her life. But, is this case going to be “the one” to break Maggie? And what does the high school girl hiding in a closet have to do with anything and everything? And one final question: My disappointment in the novel comes at the end. Mass Psell Paperback Verified Purchase. One of a series, his is a fun, light-reading sort of book.
I borrowed the Maadelyn Alt series from a friend, who only had So in order to complete her collection, I purchased this book, which is 8.
Not to be taken as serious literature, but I enjoyed it as a nice break from some heavier novels.

But I enjoyed the book, anyway. Not every book has to be Pulitzer material.
I got the impression that the author saw how well another “good witch” series sold the “Divine Circle” series by Dolores Stewart Ricciand decided to capitalize on it. This was a charming in several senses of the word, and well written murder mystery. I liked the characters and how they interacted within the storyline. I did realize early on that you were expected to have read the prior books to really know what was going on.
I hadn’t so I often was left wondering or creating my own story. Such as the powers of the boyfriend, Marcus. Is he a witch also?
Do their families know? Things of that nature made me feel a bit left out. The murder mystery was some what predictable but still well written. I will keep this author in my mind for the future though and try to catch up with the series.
As Maggie tries to find homs new place so Marcus can concentrate on his education, Maggie innocently finds herself entangled in another murder investigation. The manager of the apartment complex in which she wishes to live is found dead.
As the police with the help of Marcus and Maggie try to find the murderer, the dead manager is found not to be as he seems. Twists and turns of this story make it enjoyable reading as the crime is solved. It is also fun to watch the growing relationship between Marcus and Maggie as they try to work out various issues.
I spelp, loved, loved the book. I can’t wait for the next one!!! One person found this helpful. I read the books in this series, as soon as I can get them. They are easy to read and have a good plot line. Home for a Spell A Bewitching Mystery. All Madelyn Alt’s witchcraft books are light reading, but I enjoyed this one much more than the one before it and I’m glad I gave it a try. It took a while to figure out who the murderer was, which is my criteria for mysteries. There was almost nothing of a supernatural flavor in this one, but it was a good summer read.
Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I read spe,l enjoyed the first ho,e in this series and, since I was sick and stuck at home for a while, ended up reading all the rest one right after another. I kept hoping that the main character, Maggie, would get a little more on the ball as the series progressed, but that never seemed to happen. How many times can a character say things like, “There was something I was missing, something I couldn’t put my finger on After having dealt with this many murders in her as she never fails to remind us, about a dozen times per book supposedly sleepy country town, one would think she would either wise up and stop sticking her nose into things or, at the very least, stop being so shocked every time something bad happens.
To be fair, this book seemed to move much more quickly than the last alf in the series, but it certainly wasn’t worth what I paid for it. It was downright painful to read Maggie AND Marcus AND Tom all fumbling around like idiots when I and probably everyone with two brain cells to rub together figured out the significance of a certain broken item fairly early on.
Home for a Spell : Madelyn Alt :
And the “twist” at the very end felt sensationalist and gratuitous, and was handled with such a lack of sensitivity that I doubt I’ll bother reading any more of this series. Which is a shame, as now I’ll never know whether Maggie will ever manage to grow a spine and tell her dreadful, caricature-ish mother and sister where they can stick their attitudes. The incessant mini-lectures about how “witches” by which she actually means Wiccans can be good people, too, goshdarnit, get old really fast.
And I am a non-Wiccan Pagan.
This is a different kind of mystery and I like it. Madelyn Alt has a way of writing her character so that you feel you really know these people. Each one of the people in her stories is fully developed. I can’t wait for the next one. See all 70 reviews.
